Count Orlok Is Coming Home — ‘Nosferatu’ Blu-ray Drops Next Week

Nosferatu is coming — the hit gothic horror movie was released on Christmas Day, and landed VOD platforms last month. It’s available to rent or buy on streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV.

Fans of physical media can pick up the Blu-ray when it releases on Feb. 18, or pre-order it now. It’s available on 4K UHD Blu-ray, HD Blu-ray, or standard definition DVD.

The film was directed by Robert Eggers, primarily known for his work in the horror genre. His films include The Lighthouse, The Witch, and The Northman. Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgård in the titular role. Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emma Corrin also have supporting roles. Depp plays Ellen Hutter, a woman with a mysterious psychic connection to Count Orlok, better known as Nosferatu.

The film is a remake of the 1922 silent German Expressionist film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Eggers’ Nosferatu is the second major remake, following Werner Herzog’s 1979 film Nosferatu the Vampyre. The 1922 Nosferatu is based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, but as an unofficial adaptation, the names were changed.

Rolling Stone film reviewer David Fear praised Robert Eggers‘ approach to adapting the horror classic, writing, “[W]hile there’s a fine line between loving a movie and being slavishly devoted to it, Eggers thankfully never crosses it. Rather, he molds the man-meets-vampire, things-go-awry story into his own rigorous type of horror filmmaking, and comes up with something stylish but not slick, feral but not overly fussy in its attempts to channel that old-fashioned folkloric feeling.”

Nosferatu (1922) is available for free on a wide variety of platforms and is also available on YouTube. The 1979 version, starring Klaus Kinski, is streaming on Peacock. Likewise, Nosferatu, which was distributed by Universal Pictures, will be streaming on Peacock at a yet-to-be-announced date.
