Gorilla unexpectedly passes away at Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo has announced a subordinate of its occidental lowland gorilla unit has unexpectedly passed away.

• Kioja,  a 23-year-old, female, calved astatine the Bronx Zoo connected January 24, 2001 and came to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo connected May 21, 2009.
• Dossi, a 23-year-old, female,  calved astatine the Bronx Zoo connected February 4, 2001 and came to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo connected May 21, 2009.
• Eyare, a 2-year-old, female, calved astatine the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo connected April 20, 2022.
• Okabe, 1-year-old male, calved astatine the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo connected May 24, 2023.

According to the zoo’s website, occidental lowland gorillas are the smallest of the gorilla species, lasting betwixt 1.2 and 1.5 metres gangly and weighing betwixt 68 and 181 kilograms.

They are considered a critically endangered taxon autochthonal to the tropical rainforests of cardinal and occidental Africa.
