The film will be out in July and feature more new Rihanna music
We may not be getting a whole new Rihanna album soon, but the pop star-turned-beauty mogul will be giving us a new film and some new music when she stars as Smurfette in the new Smurfs movie, out July 18.
In the trailer, Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is abducted. As he’s taken away from Smurf Village, he lets everyone know it’s not safe there anymore. So Smurfette rallies the others to go on an international adventure to save Papa Smurf. One of the places they end up is Paris, and along the way they encounter a host of unlikely allies and potential villains.
The trailer also features two songs by Rihanna. The first is her 2007 hit “Don’t Stop the Music,” and the other is a tease of her covering Belinda Carlilsle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” The trailer promises more new music from her, as well as an original song called “Higher Love” by Desi Trill featuring DJ Khaled, Cardi B, Natania and Subhi.
On Feb. 5, Rihanna posted a 17-second clip teasing the trailer. “In my blue era,” she wrote in the caption. She and the film’s producers had announced that she was voice-cast as Smurfette in the forthcoming live-action hybrid feature back in 2023.
“This is a delight,” Rihanna said of playing the “blue badass” Smurfette at CinemaCon 2023. “Getting to do animation is a fun journey for me. I get to show up in my PJs in my third trimester. I hope this gives me cool points with my kids one day.” She previously voiced lead character Gratuity “Tip” Tucci in Dreamworks’ 2015 animated film Home.
The Smurfs film is set to premiere on July 18, pushed back from a previous release date of this upcoming Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14). Deadline reports that directors Chris Miller and Matt Landon oversaw a voiceover cast that also includes Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd and Xolo Maridueña, along with Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
