The Oscar-nominated Emilia Pérez star apologized for controversial remarks about Muslims and the murder of George Floyd
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Oscar-nominated star of Emilia Pérez, has deleted her Twitter/X account following an uproar over several of her old posts that included offensive comments about Muslims, the killing of George Floyd, and more.
As of publication, Gascón’s other social media accounts remain active, including her Instagram and Facebook. Reps for the actress did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for comment.
The uproar over Gascón’s old posts erupted yesterday when writer Sarah Hagi shared a thread that included screen grabs of at least 12 posts where Gascón made offensive statements about Islam and Muslims. She called Islam an “infection for humanity” in one, and in another, described the migration of Muslims into Spain as a “planned invasion.”
Another uncovered thread posted after the police murder of Floyd included a post in which Gascón said she thought “few people ever cared” about “a drug addict swindler.”
Gascón — who recently said she was facing “toxicity and hate speech” after becoming the first openly trans person nominated for an acting Oscar — also made several critical remarks about the 2021 Academy Awards. That year’s show featured winners like Nomadland, Minari, and Judas and the Black Messiah, and Gascón described it as a “ceremony for independent and protest films,” adding, “I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”
Yesterday, Gascón issued an apology, saying, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
