"When I was thinking who would be the perfect artist for this, I could think of no one better or more authentic than Kesha," Warren said
Kesha is lending her voice for a new documentary on Diane Warren. On Friday, the pop star released “Dear Me,” a song Warren wrote to herself, featured on Diane Warren: Relentless, a new MasterClass documentary on the songwriter that released earlier this month.
“We all know that Diane Warren is one of the most iconic songwriters of our time, but many people don’t know that my connection with her is multigenerational,” Kesha said in a statement, reminiscing on her mother Pebe Sebert writing with Warren in the Eighties.
“Once my music broke into the scene in 2008, we have worked on projects together and every song more iconic than the next, but none of them ever were publicly released,” Kesha said. “This song was so special for her to ask me to sing. It’s a song written to herself for her documentary and she has said it’s one of the most special songs she’s ever written in her life.”
“I’m so proud of her and I can’t wait for the world to see her documentary, she really is one of a kind, a true genius, a real artist,” Kesha added of the piano ballad. “She’s so committed to her art and it’s so inspiring. I hope you all love the movie, and Diane, I hope I did your song justice.”
While the song is written about and to herself, Warren explained in a statement that it’s for anyone who’s wanted to tell her younger self that “it’s going to get better.”
The new song is featured in Diane Warren: Relentless, a Bess Kargman documentary released on MasterClass, which features interviews with Cher, Common, Gloria Estefan, David Foster, and Jenifer Hudson about Warren’s genius songwriting and work ethic.
Warren has been nominated for sixteen Academy Awards for her songs written for films. This year she’s nominated for “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight. Warren has written nine Number One songs, and hits including Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” Paloma Faith’s “Only Love Can Hurt Like This,” Céline Dion’s “Because You Loved Me,” Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” and Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart.”
“When I was thinking who would be the perfect artist for this, I could think of no one better or more authentic than Kesha,” Warren said. “I felt that not only is she a great artist who would sing the song magnificently which of course she did, but that this would also speak to her and her fans on a very deep level.”
