Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino to Reunite for ‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel

A second reunion is coming. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are in talks to reprise their roles in a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the pair will return as the titular Romy and Michele and serve as executive producers. Tim Federle is set to direct the movie, which will likely start shooting in June. The sequel was written by Robin Schiff, who wrote the original film and is also the showrunner for Emily in Paris.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion became a cult hit after its release in 1997. The comedy followed two friends who haven’t accomplished much in the years since high school. When they attend their 10-year reunion, the women invent fake careers to impress their classmates (including that one of them invented Post-it’s).

The film also starred Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Julia Campbell, Camryn Manheim, Elaine Hendrix, and Justin Theroux. Last year, Cumming told Entertainment Weekly he would like to return for a second film. “I think what’s great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters,” Cumming said.

In 2022, Kudrow and Sorvino reunited onstage during the SAG Awards to present the award for Outstanding Comedy Series Ensemble to the cast of Ted Lasso. “I just realized this, we’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting to great ensembles,” Sorvino quipped onstage.

The actress previously reflected on the legacy of the film to Entertainment Weekly. “There’s something about Romy and Michele that’s very enduring,” Sorvino said. “I think it’s the nerd friendship, rising above and silliness of it all because we’re really stupid. We think we’re smart, but we’re really dumb and yet we love each other.”
