Luka Dončić is a Laker now. In a move that shocked even the most seasoned of NBA analysts and reverberated far beyond the world of NBA Twitter, the Mavericks star was traded late on Saturday to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. The trade was apparently known to only a few, leaving Davis, Dončić, LeBron James, and others in the dark until after it was finalized.
In addition to Dončić, the Lakers acquired Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks, while Dallas acquired Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. The secretive deal came to fruition abruptly, and the merch went on sale even more quickly, as Lakers fans can already purchase a Luka Dončić jersey.
The star player will keep his jersey number, 77, which he has worn with the Mavericks and the Slovenian national basketball team. Likewise, Anthony Davis will keep number 3 when he plays for Dallas.
Davis and Dončić are expected to meet on Feb. 25 on their new respective teams, when the Mavericks face the Lakers at the Crypto.com arena. The last time the team met was on Jan. 7, when the Mavericks beat the Lakers 118-97.
