‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Is Now Available on Digital Following Huge Box Office Run

The latest installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series earned the strongest reviews of the franchise so far and outran its predecessors at the box office. The threequel stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now available to rent or buy on VOD platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. The release comes on the heels of the news that Sonic 4 has been confirmed for a March 2027 release. Sonic 3 is available to rent for $19.99 or buy for $24.99.

If you’re looking to catch up on the rest of the franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 2020 and 2022, are streaming on Paramount+. As a Paramount release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will inevitably also end up on Paramount+, but a streaming date has not yet been confirmed. Blu-ray collectors will have to wait as well since there is not yet a release date for physical media. Paramount+ is available with Showtime for $12.99/mo or $7.99/mo for the Essential plan.

The franchise is based on the hit video game series, which originally debuted on the Sega Genesis. The popularity of the character outlasted the console, and games have since been released for Nintendo, PlayStation, and XBOX consoles, as well as mobile games.

The 2020 film was initially met with intense internet mockery when it was announced, due to Sonic’s appearance. The film’s animators worked overtime to redesign Sonic’s appearance, particularly the character’s unnervingly human teeth. Bucking the trend of most trilogies, the Sonic films have gotten progressively higher Rotten Tomatoes ratings, with the latest installment notching a respectable 86%.

In addition to the films, Paramount+ debuted Knuckles in 2024, with Idris Elba reprising his role from the franchise and Adam Pally costarring. The series is streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
