This Grateful Dead Yerba Mate Is the Band’s ‘Weirdest’ Collab Yet (and It’s Back in Stock)

There is no shortage of Grateful Dead collaborations and merch in the marketplace these days, but there’s one long strange trip release that’s caught our attention: this official Grateful Dead yerba mate.

Yes, it seems the dancing bears have made their way to South America, for a Deadhead-inspired take on the traditional herbal tea and energy drink. And the canned beverage is now available to buy online.

Often used as an energy drink, Weird Tea says each can of its Grateful Dead yerba mate contains 160mg of caffeine. Weird Tea also says its drink is certified USDA organic with no artificial colors or sweeteners (the brand uses organic cane sugar for taste). Note: while yerba mate and kombucha are both tea-inspired beverages, mate is not a fermented drink, and so it retains more natural caffeine. It also doesn’t have the tangy “vinegar” taste of kombucha, as it’s made from the leaves of the ilex paraguariensis plant, which gives off a more herbal flavor.

This is an officially-licensed Grateful Dead collaboration, with original artwork on the cans inspired by classic Deadhead iconography (think: lightning bolt and roses). Drink Weird says the collaboration brings together the brand’s “commitment to organic goodness and free-spirited weirdness with the musical legacy and cosmic vibes of the Grateful Dead.”

“As kindred spirits floating through the ethereal atmosphere of our universe, this amalgamation feels unavoidable,” the brand says on its website. “How could we NOT join forces and spread the ethos of getting Weird and staying Grateful?”
