Investigation Discovery's Who Is Luigi Mangione will release on February 17
A new documentary set for release later this month seeks to shed new light on the psyche of Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer in the assassination of United Healthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson.
The new hour-long doc from Investigation Discovery will feature interviews from some who knew Mangione personally, as well as with New York mayor Eric Adams, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny and other experts on the case. “The radicalization strikes terror and anxiety,” Adams says in the trailer that dropped on Friday.
The doc will combine interviews with Mangione’s posts prior to Thompson’s death. One of the posts shared in the trailer features Mangione writing that “violence against those who lead us to destruction is justified as self defense.”
Thompson’s killing quickly became one of the biggest stories of the year this past December, a reflection of the deep-rooted frustration much of the country has with the current healthcare system. Mangione became an infamous figure online since his arrest, with the internet thirsting over him after he was apprehended, while many shared more contempt for the executive and the healthcare system, rather than much sympathy or disgust over an act of lethal violence.
Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania after a manhunt that lasted several days, and he was officially charged with murder on December 9. He was said to be carrying a manifesto criticizing the healthcare system when he was caught. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to murder and terror charges.
