‘Yellowjackets’ Season Three: Secrets From the Wilderness Resurface in Bloody Trailer

This Valentine’s Day, there’s more trauma in the air than love for the Yellowjackets team. The series will return for its third season with a two-episode premiere on Feb. 14. The series picks up in the past as summer arrives after a particularly grueling winter in the wilderness. But even after nearly three decades, the crew is still frozen in fear as the secrets they buried come back to haunt them.

The trailer opens with the menacing sound of Drowning Pool’s “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” as the premise of the show is recited like a screwed-up fairytale: “Once upon a time, a bunch of teenage girls got stranded in the Wilderness. And they hunted their friends, feasted on their flesh, and they went completely nuts.”

A synopsis of the forthcoming season reads: “As the women fight to keep their lives from unraveling, they must confront a chilling question: who are they really, and what dark truths are they hiding from each other and themselves?”

With the hunt underway, the group finds their morality colliding with their survival instincts as their trust in one another wavers. In the present day, the fight continues, and more suspicions arise. “Think about how screwed up we would be if we had survived the plane crash, only to end up eating each other,” Misty (Christina Ricci) tells Lottie (Simone Kessell), who promptly responds: “Oh, I do.”

Last year, Yellowjackets co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco and actress Courtney Eaton, who plays teenage Lottie, told Rolling Stone about filming the gruesome cannibalism episode in season two.

“We tried to joke and bring some light to it, but once you got into shooting it, your brain got so convinced that you were doing something wrong,” Eaton said. “Samantha [Hanratty, who plays teenage Misty] threw up. I gagged. There was a shot where Jasmin [Savoy Brown, who plays teenage Taissa] just ends up grabbing Jackie’s face and takes a big chunk out of her cheek, and all of us are grabbing an arm and eating it off the bone. So it was a mindfuck. I think we scared the crew.”

Lisco added: “We’re borrowing from Greek tragedy. The Greeks would play a lot of stuff offscreen and it would be even more harrowing, because it would mushroom in your consciousness, because you’d be imagining it and not actually seeing every moment of it. We tried to give you just enough to the point where when you turned off the episode, you would have a hard time not thinking about it.”
