Amanda Seyfried Wants Sabrina Carpenter to Join ‘Mamma Mia 3’

Could Sabrina Carpenter join the Mamma Mia film franchise? In a new interview with ABC News, Amanda Seyfried confirmed she’d love to have the pop singer step in as her character’s daughter.

When asked about a potential third film Seyfried replied, “Mamma Mia 3, let’s go baby. Everybody says it’s gonna happen. But I mean, I haven’t seen a script.”

Reporter Will Ganss then asked if the actress had seen Carpenter covering ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” on her current Short ‘n Sweet tour. “Because we know age is sort of a forgettable construct in the MMCU, the Mamma Mia Cinematic Universe,” he added. “So people are saying, could Sabrina play Sophie’s daughter?”

“Yeah, technically she could,” Seyfried said, seemingly unconvinced. But Ganss reminded Seyfried that Cher played Meryl Streep‘s mom in the sequel despite them being only three years apart.

“You’re right, actually, it doesn’t matter,” Seyfried agreed. “You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be. I don’t mind. I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan.”

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, a sequel to the 2008 film, arrived in 2018. Christine Baranski recently told The Hollywood Reporter that there have been discussions about a third film.

“I was in London with [producer] Judy Craymer at our favorite watering hole [and] she is planning Mamma Mia 3,” Baranski said. “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

Streep, whose character Donna died in the sequel, told Deadline that talks about the film are “imminent” and that she wants to do it if there’s a way to bring Donna back. “I don’t know how they’re going to do it,” Streep said. “They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon.”

Carpenter performed at Madison Square Garden earlier this week, marking her debut at the New York venue. During the show, she performed “Mamma Mia,” which she’d chosen to cover during a game of spin the bottle.

“I’m so mesmerized by New York City,” she said during the show. “This is like home to me. The first time I ever played in New York City, I believe I was 16 and it was the Highline Ballroom. Y’all were not there. My whole life I’ve always wanted to play Madison Square Garden, but I wasn’t sure if the first time I’d ever played, it would be to a sold-out crowd. So thank you so much.”
