The Paul Feig film will premiere at SXSW nearly seven years after the release of its first installation A Simple Favor
Nearly seven years after the 2018 release of Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively will reunite in the forthcoming sequel, Another Simple Favor. The film will make its world premiere on opening night at the SXSW Film Festival in March.
“I have a simple favor to ask you… can you save the date?” Feig wrote on Instagram. The first-look poster for the dark comedy crime thriller features Kendrick and Lively standing near the edge of a martini glass-shaped cutout image of Capri, Italy. The tagline for the film reads “Every friendship has its twists,” with a drop of blood pooling beneath the letter “V” in the title.
Another Simple Favor will premiere on March 7 at SXSW ahead of its wide streaming release on Prime Video beginning May 1.
The announcement of the film’s official title and release date comes after Feig debunked rumors that Lively’s ongoing legal battle with her It Ends With Us director and co-star Justin Baldoni would indefinitely delay its release. “This is total BS. Sorry,” Feig said in January. “The movie is finished and coming out soon. Don’t believe anything you read on social media these days.”
Feig voiced his support for Lively in December shortly after she filed a lawsuit against Baldoni alleging sexual harassment on set and the coordination of a smear campaign against her. “I’ve now made two movies with Blake and all I can say is she’s one of the most professional, creative, collaborative, talented, and kind people I’ve ever worked with,” Feig wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “She truly did not deserve any of this smear campaign against her. I think it’s awful she was put through this.”
He added: “The movie is awesome, and Blake and Anna turn in amazing performances. I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
Rolling Stone‘s 2018 review of A Simple Favor said, “Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively shine as they rarely have before. True, the script, adapted by Jessica Sharzer from the Darcey Bell novel, meets at a crossroads between comedy and thriller without deciding which direction to go (our vote: head for the giggles). But until an ending that flies ruinously off the rails, A Simple Favor is raunchy fun that offers an unexpected take on the twists and turns of female friendship.”
