Acknowledging outstanding achievement, the Bagerhat district administration and sports association recognised nine medal-winning athletes for their national and international successes on Thursday.
The ceremony, held in the district commissioner's conference room, included the recognition of Mirona Khatun, assistant coach of Bangladesh women's football team that triumphed in this year's SAFF Women's Championship, and Biswas Anisur Rahman, coach of Bangladesh's weightlifting team.
Also honoured was Baki Billah, a weightlifter who represented Bangladesh internationally. Both Biswas and Baki are set to represent the country at the upcoming 2024 IWF World Championship in Bahrain.
Athletes were presented with commemorative plaques and floral tributes. Moreover, presiding as chief guest, deputy commissioner Ahmed Kamrul Ahsan unveiled the new jersey for the district cricket team.
"These talented individuals have not only made Bagerhat proud but have elevated the nation's reputation on the global stage. We will continue to support and honour those who excel in sports," Ahsan said, urging experienced athletes to contribute to the growth of Bagerhat's sports culture by mentoring the next generation.
Expressing her delight, Mirona remarked: "I gave my best to ensure our women's team could perform exceptionally. Winning the championship was a moment of immense pride, and today's recognition from the district administration adds to that joy."
