The duo performed against a backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains and Eaton Canyon, which were devastated by the blaze
Billie Eilish and her brother and collaborator Finneas paid tribute to Altadena, which was one of the communities devastated in the Los Angeles fires. Performing against a backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains and Eaton Canyon, the duo delivered a soaring rendition of “Birds of a Feather” at Crypto.com Area.
Eilish took the stage wearing a blue Los Angeles Dodgers cap, yellow jersey, and baggy jeans (after sporting a black-and-white Prada ensemble on the red carpet), while several of her peers including Taylor Swift and Cynthia Erivo danced to her performance. Photos of Eilish and her brother wandering int the foothills of the canyon with their family dogs were shared on the screen throughout the song. After finishing their set, Eilish said, “I love you L.A.”
The track is the highlight from Eilish’s most recent album Hit Me Hard and Soft, which she released in May 2024. “I feel like this album is me,” Eilish told Rolling Stone at the time. The LP had no singles, but “Birds of a Feather” was an immediate fan favorite, becoming the most-streamed song on Spotify in 2024.
“Birds of a Feather” racked up three of Eilish’s seven Grammy nominations this year, receiving nods for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Her other nominations include Best Pop Dance Recording (“L’amour De Ma Vie” [Over Now Extended Edit]),” Best Pop Duo/Group Duo Performance (“Guess” with Charli XCX), Best Pop Vocal Album, and Album of the Year. The latter makes her the first artist to have her first three albums nominated in the category.
The Grammys performance takes place just days after Eilish performed at FireAid, the star-studded benefit raising funds in wake of the Los Angeles wildfires. Eilish performed twice: once with Finneas (“Wildflower,” “The Greatest,” “Birds of a Feather”) and a surprise appearance with Green Day (the American Idiot deep cut “Last Night on Earth“).
“It feels really hopeful and good in here,” she told the FireAid crowd. “I just feel honored to be here. It’s a really, really scary time and it’s been so devastating. L.A. is my favorite place in the world and my only home. We grew up here, and I care about it so much. It’s the greatest place in the world. It’s been so, so devastating what’s going on. To everyone, we love you. We will not forget about you. We will keep doing this for you.”
