Julien Baker Previews New Songs, Leaves Gig Early After Feeling Sick at Tour Shows

Julien Baker has been on tour and her weekend appearances featured new songs, and also an unfortunate situation where she got sick. On Saturday, she previewed two unreleased songs alongside indie rock artist Torres. The duo performed the two country tracks at Webster Hall in New York, the first of three shows in the city. During one of the unnamed tracks, Baker gently strums a guitar as she sings, “Sometimes it makes me feel worse/Used to think that it was magic/Now I’m sure that it’s a curse.”

The following night, Baker ended her show early after falling ill. Baker’s boygenius bandmate Lucy Dacus, shared the unfortunate news with the crowd.

“I have, actually, sad news, which is that totally unexpectedly Julien rushed off the stage and is sick and is throwing up,” Dacus said, adding that she got the permission from Baker to inform the crowd. “So the show is not gonna keep happening. She can’t just — you know. Nobody here wants that. Thanks for understanding.”

“Know that you’re in mind and she was wanting to walk out here, shaking, and finish the show,” Dacus continued, before encouraging the crowd to applaud Baker’s band. “So sorry on her behalf.”

Baker announced her fall tour in August, starting her North American trek in Chicago. Other stops include Washington, D.C., and All Things Go Music Festival in Columbia, Maryland, and New York. While in Chicago, Baker debuted new songs “Middle Children” and “High in the Basement.”

Boygenius have been on a hiatus, since announcing their final show in February. “This is our last show, and we’re feeling it,” Dacus told a Los Angeles crowd. Boygenius closed out the show with fan favorite “Not Strong Enough,” off their debut album The Record.
