The new song "Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor" was inspired by Mexican legend José Alfredo Jiménez
2025 is shaping up to be a big year for rising star Pablopablo, and if you need proof, just check out “Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor.” The anti-Valentine’s Day anthem is the indie hitmaker’s biggest swing yet, and he’s teamed up with Mexican heavyweight Carin León and fellow genre disruptor Ralphie Choo for maximum power.
Pablopablo, who was born Pablo Drexler, hails from Madrid like his frequent collaborators Choo and C. Tangana. In 2022, he won his first two Latin Grammy awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year for his work on Jorge Drexler and C. Tangana’s game-changing “Tocarte.” A third Latin Grammy followed last November for co-writing Nathy Peluso’s empowering “Aprender a Amar.” Now Pablopablo is moving to the forefront with “Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor,” which was inspired by Mexican heartbreak king José Alfredo Jiménez.
“I think José Alfredo is a key influence for much of the music coming out of Mexico right now,” Pablo said in a statement. “When I was in the studio writing with Pucho [C. Tangana] and Carin León, we were talking about José Alfredo, and I wanted to share this idea to see what they thought. Carin loved it and wrote his verse in five minutes. I was already a huge fan of his, and it was really exciting for me — plus, his verse is incredible.”
Choo adds that song came from looking at love from a different perspective. “It’s a song written from a place of respect for a love that just doesn’t quite take hold,” Choo explained. “No matter how much you pray for it to work, reality will tell you whether it does or not. And even if your heart is as cold as steel, it’s still hard to let go — because of the other person and all the foundations you’ve built, their vision of the future, and yours struggling to hold on.”
Though known for blending música Mexicana with country, León is no stranger to the Spanish avant-garde scene. He previously collaborated with C. Tangana on “Cambia!,” which led him to Pablopablo. Add Choo to the mix and “Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor” is global pop at its finest and most poignant. The trio let a toxic lover down gently with this haunting collaboration.
“Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor” and “Lejos De Más” featuring Helado Negro preview Pablopablo’s highly anticipated album with Mom + Pop Music. Next month, he will start working the music festival circuit with performances at Lollapalooza Argentina, Colombia’s Estereo Picnic, and Mexico’s Ceremonia.
