Oppenheimer stars Murphy and Downey won their first Oscars, as did Randolph, at the 2024 awards ceremony
The 96th Oscars featured wild moments, such as a nearly naked John Cena and a Ken-inspired musical number. It also had heartfelt speeches by first-time Oscars winners Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Cillian Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr. At the 97th Oscars, airing on March 2, the first-timers along with Emma Stone, who also won an Oscar last year, will serve as presenters on one of Hollywood’s biggest nights, producers of the award ceremony announced Wednesday.
At the 2024 Academy Awards, Randolph took home best supporting actress as a school chef in The Holdovers, the first nomination and win for the Philly-born actress. Murphy and Downey also nabbed their first Oscar wins, for their roles as the “Destroyer of Worlds” quantum physicist and the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, respectively, in Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer.
Downey, who had previously received Oscar nominations for his starring role in Chaplin and supporting role in Tropic Thunder, attributed his “terrible childhood” and later the Academy for the win.
“I needed this job more than it needed me,” Downey said in March 2024. “I stand here before you a better man because of it.”
Stone picked up her second Oscar statue, following her 2017 La La Land win, for her role as the Frankenstein-like Bella Baxter in Poor Things. Her win at the 96th Oscars proved an upset for Oscars fans who had hoped Lily Gladstone would make history as the first Native American to win the Best Actress Oscar. Conan O’Brien will host the 97th Academy Awards. Although it’s his first time helming the Hollywood awards show, he’s previously served as MC for the Emmys in 2002 and 2005.
