Watch Molly Shannon Revive ‘SNL’ Character to Advise Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris wasn’t in attendance at the traditional Al Smith Dinner in New York on Thursday night, but offered a video consolation to attendees instead. Harris enlisted actress Molly Shannon, who revived her beloved Saturday Night Live character, Catholic school girl Mary Katherine Gallagher.

In the video, Harris begins by speaking about the Al Smith Dinner, a tradition each election where the presidential candidates roast each other and themselves. As she speaks, Shannon runs behind her as Mary Katherine Gallagher. “Hey, whats going on?” Harris says. “Who was that?”

Harris then invites Mary Katherine to help her write her speech for the dinner, which she describes as “an important tradition that I’m so proud to be a part of.” “My feelings about what you should say tonight would be best expressed in a monologue from one of my favorite made-for-TV series,” Shannon replies.

“We need a woman to represent us,” Shannon says, adding, “And with this woman, we can fly!” She then explains that the quote is from House of the Dragon and advises Harris not to lie in her speech. “Thou shall not bear false witness to thy neighbor,” Shannon says. She also suggests that Harris not “insult Catholics.”

“I would never do that, no matter where I was,” Harris replies. “That would be like criticizing Detroit in Detroit.”

When Harris later advises that Shannon “never let anyone tell you who they are, you tell them who you are,” Shannon invokes Taylor Swift‘s “Shake it Off.”

Donald Trump, who attended the event, used his appearance to take aim at Harris for missing the dinner. “My opponent feels like she does not have to be here, which is deeply disrespectful for the event and in particular for our great Catholic community,” he said. “Very disrespectful.”

He added, “Tradition holds that I am supposed to tell a few self-deprecating jokes this evening. So here it goes. Nope. I’ve got nothing… I guess I don’t see the point of taking shots at myself when other people have been shooting at me for a hell of a long time.”
