"I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice," the singer told fans
Zayn Malik pulled the plug on his concert in Newcastle, England last night after fans were already in the venue.
The One Direction singer was scheduled to perform at O2 City Hall Newcastle as part of his current Stairway to the Sky Tour, which kicked off in Leeds last month, however the audience was asked to leave shortly before Malik was scheduled to take the stage.
“The show will no longer go ahead tonight,” the venue said in an announcement, via Metro. “We apologize for the late notice, it was his hope that he would be able to continue with the show. But this is no longer possible. Please contact your point of purchase for reschedule or refunds. If you have parents or guardians collecting you, please stay in the auditorium and wait to be collected.”
Malik took to Instagram to share his own apology. “I’m so sorry to do this but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight and without it there’s no show,” he wrote. “I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice… I held onto hope until the very last moment. I’m hopeful with some rest tonight I’ll be back on stage tomorrow. My deepest apologies Newcastle love you all xx.”
The Stairway to the Sky Tour, in support of his latest album Room Under the Stars, is Malik’s first solo tour. It was set to kick off on Oct. 23 in San Francisco before traveling to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City, however Malik elected to postpone the U.S. dates following the death of his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
“Given the heartbreaking loss experienced this week, I’ve made the decision to postpone the US leg of the Stairway to the Sky Tour,” Malik wrote on social media. “The dates will be rescheduled for January and I’ll post them as soon as it’s all set in the next few days. Your tickets will remain valid for the new dates.”
Malik later delayed the start of the European leg of the tour, which was scheduled to begin Nov. 20 and 21 in Edinburgh. He instead started the tour in Leeds, with the Edinburgh shows to now take place Dec. 8 and 9. The singer’s next concert is set to take place tonight, Dec. 4, in Manchester at the O2 Apollo.
