Boxer disqualified as gumshield falls out six times during beatdown from 10-0 American heavyweight

Richard Torrez saw his KO streak come to an end on Friday night.

The American heavyweight prospect had stopped all 10 of the opponents he’d faced since turning pro after winning a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Torrez appeared to be well on his way to scoring his 11^th knockout when Joey Dawejko was disqualified from their fight on Jaime Munguia’s comeback card.  

‘The Gentleman Boxer’ dominated his 28-11-4 opponent from the first bell – but it wasn’t until the fourth round that he began to put a beating on Dawejko.

Referee Wes Melton deducted two points from the underdog when his gumshield fell out four times during the three-minute frame.

Dawejko was warned that he would be disqualified if it happened again.

In round five, he landed one of his best punches of the fight, but during the melee, his mouthpiece dropped to the floor and forced the referee to wave off the bout.

Boxing fans took to social media to react to the rarely-seen DQ.

One person tweeted: “Blame his team for the loss.”

Another said: “Kept spitting his mouthpiece out embarrassing.”

A third person added: “Never seen a DQ over that .. but have seen points deducted.”

Someone else bemoaned Torrez losing his KO streak: “Got robbed of a TKO.”

The man himself kept it classy while discussing his opponent’s antics post-fight.

“Joey was a vet, just like I said,” Torrez told Top Rank. “He didn’t give up.”

“That mouthpiece came out a little too much. That’s a veteran move, but at the end of the day, congratulations to him. He put up a good fight.

“I think we were able to show more boxing ability that I was telling you about.”

Torrez was asked to define his position in the always-exciting heavyweight division.

“I am whatever you say I am,” he said.

“If you tell me, I’m a prospect – I’m a prospect. If you tell me, I’m a contender – I’m a contender.

“I’m Richard Torres at the end of the day. I’m going to fight the same way.”
