‘Never caught from behind’ – Reggie Bush was as fast as Tyreek Hill and makes Noah Lyles Olympics comparison for 40-yard duel

Reggie Bush is one of the best running backs in college football history and won a Super Bowl in the NFL.

Almost a decade after his last pro game, there are still lingering questions about how good Bush could have been as a professional, since injuries and playing situations limited his full potential.

Bush, who recently saw his Heisman Trophy returned after a 14-year period, gave a fascinating glimpse at his game-changing talent during an interview with former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Speed was at the core of Bush’s talent.

He twice ran for more than 1,000 yards in a season while playing in the pros, while also returning punts and kickoffs.

That led to a big question from ‘RGIII’.

“In your prime, could you beat Tyreek Hill in a race?” the former Washington QB and ESPN analyst asked Bush on Outta Pocket with RGIII.

Within seconds, it was clear that Bush believed he had a real chance in a 1-on-1 against Hill.

“Ooooh,” Bush replied as he thought. “Ooooh.”

At USC, Bush was twice named an All-American and twice finished in the top-five of Heisman voting.

He then finished fifth in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year voting with the New Orleans Saints.

“Let me say this: In the 100 (meters), I ran a 10:39, so that was my fastest,” Bush said.

He also clocked a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash.

Bush was so intrigued by the comparison to Hill — who’s widely regarded as the fastest player in the NFL — that he asked on camera what the Miami Dolphins wide receiver’s 40 time was.

“I believe I would have given Tyreek a run for his money,” Bush said “Because I had the explosive first step.”

“Yes, you did,” Griffin said.

“I had the breakaway speed,” Bush said.

“This is a fact,” said Griffin, nodding his head in agreement.

Then the interview was paused as Hill’s 40 time was revealed.

The former Kansas City Chiefs star didn’t run the 40 during the NFL combine.

But the fifth-round pick out of West Alabama was clocked running a 4.29 during a college pro day.

That was .01 second faster than Bush’s personal best 40 time.

“I was a 4.3 flat,” said Bush, as he started laughing.

“Dang, let’s go,” Griffin said.

Hill has recently been in the news for attempting to race Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles, who received worldwide attention during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lyles barely won the men’s 100m in a photo finish.

“I would beat Noah Lyles,” Hill said.

“I wouldn’t beat him by a lot. But I would beat Noah Lyles.”

As Bush considered a 1-on-1 race vs Hill, the former USC Heisman Trophy winner was ready to go back to his youthful prime and burn the track.

“It was like a Noah Lyles 100, right there,” Bush said.

“I don’t think people know the difference between 4.29 and 4.3 flat,” Griffin said. “It’s literally like … “

Then the former Heisman winner as Baylor’s QB held up two fingers and barely separated them, showing how close a race between Hill and Bush could have been.

“I’ve never been caught from behind, ever,” Bush said.

“That was always my one thing. … Never been caught from behind in my career and always had you know open-field speed.”

“Still to this day the most electrifying athlete I have seen in college football,” one fan posted.

“Fun watching Bush back in the day,” a second fan wrote. Glad he got his trophy back, too.”
